I am shooting 5 bracketed images with a D300 set on Continuous High speed. They are essentially from the exact same spot, with only a fraction of movement.
RE: Getting Started

Thank you all for your comments.

In particular I'd like to address this to John.

I went to your site and looked around. There's a lot of very useful info there. The panos you have posted are fantastic. With them you've done exactly what I'm trying to accomplish.

This project has had a very steep learning curve for me. Terms like f-stop and FOV meant nothing to me before I got started on this.

I'm using a very simple panohead (made from 1/4"x1" aluminum bar with the help of a friend who manages a machine shop.) I found a tutorial (very similar to yours) on finding the entrance pupil, so I've overcome the problems with parallax.

I've also experimented with a half-dozen different programs (Autostitch, Microsoft's Image Composite Editor and a few others that are free to use) trying to achieve that immersive effect, but I've never had any real success. I can get photos (taken with a point-and-shoot camera) to stitch, but none produce the kind of output I am looking for.

Is the fish-eye lens necessary to give that 360 X 180 look?

Any help I can get will be very much appreciated.

Hello Max

When using autocreate it is possible to tick a box to delete intermediate files in the preference screen.
But when using auto align the intermediate files are still saved and you have to delete them manually.
Is it possible when using autoalign that the you can delete the intermediate files automatically? I didn't find a box to tick that in the preference screen for auto aligning. Do I miss something?

Kind regards,
Henk Tijdink

Cropping and deleting/recycling are handled by two different programs. The copping program doesn't do any deleting or recycling. Intermediate files are those created by the stitcher. I'll think about reworking the logic based on your comment, but for now, this functions as I intended and designed.

Max

TIFFCROP not using Pref "Use Recycle rather than Delete

TIFFCROP, being a separate App, is not using the PTA Preference "If removing intermediate files, use Recycle rather than Delete" on the Behavior tab".
This is a shame, as it leads to extra keystrokes to either manually invoke TIFFCROP after uncropped final image has been reviewed; or to extra iterations of image stitching once a cropped final image is found to be sized other than expected.
If possible, TIFFCROP should be invoked with a Parameter to control handling of the Source Image. Else if it is PTA that Deletes (not Recycles) that Source Image after TIFFCROP (as error message when it cannot do so would indicate), then PTA behavior needs to be standardized.

Hi Steve,
I just posted the counter-point to this shot.
I have had similar issues with Manzanita clusters that you had with the pines. In person, very 3-d and interesting, but hard to keep the same interest in a flat photo without lots of tweaking. Nice job on the processing.
cheers, Darcy

I'd be interested in your opinions, comparing the two.

Dave,

Out of the three, I like the last one the best. Being honest, the sky didn't catch my eye in any of them, so I had to go back and look at them all again when you mentioned the clouds! The composition feels more "balanced" to me with the entire tree visible. In fact, if it had a little more on the left, I think I would like that even more. But, now I'm just being difficult!

Max

Shore Pines and Moss, Blacklock Point, OR

A couple days ago, we took some friends on a hike to Blacklock Point, just a few miles north of Port Orford, OR. The trail starts near the airport, a shockingly huge runway, built during WWII, 5000 feet long, meets the eye, posing the question, whats that doing here, in the middle of nowhere?. The small planes that now use it, take off or land in about 1/10 of it!

Along the trail, there are many twisted forms of shore pines, tough to photograph, as they tend to blend into the background trees, at least without a 3d view. I spotted a brilliant green, moss covered tree, laying across a bog, about 200 feet off trail. It drew me like a magnet! There were some very interesting trees behind it, so I did a 6 image stitch.

After getting home and processing/stitching the images, I was a bit disappointed in the result. It didnt stand out as brilliantly as the visual effect when I saw it, so I started playing with ideas in Photoshop. With masks and layers, I desaturated the image, except for the mossy log, then added another layer, giving a hint of sepia tone to those less saturated areas. I darkened the background trees, other than the twisted trunks that are closer, which I lightened, so they would stand out somewhat. I think I finally managed to get the look and emotional feeling of what I saw.

Here's the alternative version, shot from the same location but using a 10 mm lens. But a substantial portion of the foreground is cropped, so it's probably the rough equivalent of a 14 or 15 mm lens.

I don't know whether I like this one better or not.
